There is no single best place for everyone. The strongest choice is an exact location inside the path with a clear western horizon, a workable forecast and a realistic travel plan. These reference points show why a city name alone is not enough.

Official Spanish tourism and IGN information place the path across the northern half of mainland Spain, from Galicia eastward to the Balearic Islands. Use the regional outline to shortlist an area, then use an exact-coordinate calculation before choosing a site.

  • Northern mainland — The path runs from Galicia across northern and inland parts of Spain, with official examples including A Coruña, Oviedo, Santander, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia.
  • Balearic Islands — The path continues to the Balearics, including Palma. The Sun is very low there, so a regional path label must be followed by a western-horizon check.
  • Outside the path — Locations outside the totality band see a partial eclipse. Being close to a listed city does not establish totality for a different road, valley or neighbourhood.

Mainland totality: start inside the path

A mainland reference such as Segovia is a useful starting point because it is inside the totality path. From there, check the exact coordinates, solar azimuth and western horizon before committing to a road, field or rooftop.

The Balearics: totality with a stricter horizon test

The Balearic section also reaches totality, but the Palma reference has an especially low Sun. Island access may be attractive; the observing site still needs an unobstructed view toward the eclipse azimuth.

Madrid: a useful partial-eclipse comparison

Madrid demonstrates the difference between being near the path and being in it. A deep partial eclipse can be worthwhile, but it does not provide the dark-sky totality experience described by a totality guide.

  1. Start with an exact pin inside the totality path; a province or city label cannot establish totality.
  2. Check the solar altitude and azimuth at that pin. On 12 August 2026 the Sun is low, so inspect the western horizon for ridges, trees and buildings.
  3. Use the weather forecast as the date approaches. August climate averages can narrow the search, but they cannot guarantee a clear low Sun.
  4. Keep a practical alternative with travel time and access checked. A theoretically better point is not useful if you cannot reach it before the contacts begin.
  5. Plan eye safety in advance: use certified solar viewers before and after totality, and put protection back on before the bright photosphere returns.
