On 12 August 2026, mainland Spain will experience its first total solar eclipse in over a century. Unlike typical midday eclipses, this event will unfold late in the afternoon as the Sun dips toward the western horizon, reaching totality with solar elevation angles ranging between 2° and 10° across Northern and Central Spain.
1. Essential Equipment Protection: ISO 12312-2 Filters
During partial contact phases (C1 through C2 and C3 through C4), you must keep an ISO 12312-2 certified solar filter firmly attached to your camera lens or mobile device. Standard neutral density (ND) filters or polarizers do not block harmful infrared radiation and will permanently melt your camera sensor.
- Solar Filter Spec: Use Baader AstroSolar Safety Film (ND 5.0) or certified glass solar filters.
- Filter Removal: The filter must remain ON until the second contact (C2), when the last sliver of sunlight vanishes into Baily's Beads. During the 1 to 2 minutes of totality, remove the filter to capture the delicate solar corona. Reattach it immediately at C3!
2. Camera Settings & Exposure Bracketing
The solar corona possesses a dynamic range exceeding 12 EV, far greater than any single sensor exposure can capture in a single frame. The solution is Exposure Bracketing (AEB).
Recommended Manual Camera Settings:
Base ISO: ISO 100 or 200 (for minimal sensor noise)
Aperture: f/8 to f/11 (sweet spot for optical sharpness)
Partial Phase Shutter Speed (with Filter): 1/1000s to 1/2000s
Totality: corona exposures (filter removed): 1/2000s (prominences), 1/500s (inner corona), 1/60s (middle corona), 1/4s (outer coronal streamers)
3. DEM Horizon Planning for Sunset Totality
Because totality occurs less than an hour before sunset in Spain, terrain obstruction is your primary obstacle. A mountain ridge 15 km to your west elevated 500 meters above your location creates an artificial horizon angle of 1.9° — which can cut off the Sun minutes before C2.
Use the SunEclipses Simulator to calculate a global DEM terrain profile from your planned tripod position. The simulator checks the solar line of sight against that terrain profile and reports the source and local pixel size. Verify marginal results on site because buildings, trees, snow, unusual refraction and DEM error are not modelled.

4. Smartphone Photography Tips
Modern smartphones can capture surprisingly beautiful wide-angle environmental photos during totality:
- Tape a certified solar filter film over the phone lens during partial phases.
- Turn OFF auto-flash and tap to lock exposure on the bright inner corona during totality.
- Use a phone tripod to prevent blur as the sky darkens to deep dusk levels.
